March 23, 2007
Dear NOC Services Client,
Overnight on Saturday, March 31 through Sunday, April 1, 2007, NOC Services Corp. will be performing an e-mail system upgrade.
No e-mail will be lost during this time and we expect that, at most, there will be a five minute period during which you will be unable to send or retrieve e-mail through our systems. Mail addressed to you during this time will be held and delivered shortly thereafter.
If you only receive e-mail through our servers, but send e-mail through your ISP (Comcast, Verizon, etc.), you do not need to make any changes on your system unless you want to take advantage of the optional encryption we will now have available.
If you send e-mail through our servers, you will need to make an adjustment to the settings on your system. However, our testing indicates this should take less than five minutes to complete. Information about how to do this can be found in the links below.
We have been testing the new server and the updated software installed on it for the past three months and are now ready to deploy it for your use. In addition to being a faster machine and having more memory, which are critical to handling increasing amounts of mail (especially spam), this new server offers a number of features we believe are valuable to our clients. There is no additional cost to you.
* Improved bulk e-mail/spam identification
The new mail server scans all incoming e-mail. If the message is
suspected to be unsolicited bulk/commercial e-mail ("spam"), the
subject line will be tagged accordingly.
* Virus detection and suspicious e-mail warning capabilities
Anti-virus software is installed and runs on the mail server, and
is updated hourly. Many known viruses will be caught by this software
though it is not a substitute for anti-virus software on your computer
but rather an additional layer of protection. In addition, suspicious
e-mails -- for example, an message that tells you to visit PayPal to
reset your password but has a link to a website in China -- are marked
accordingly.
This is all automated and done as the message is being delivered. On average, this scanning delays a message less than ten seconds. No human is involved in this scanning so your privacy is maintained.
* (Optional) Client-server encryption
You will now have the option of encrypting the connection between
your computer and the NOC Services e-mail servers. This will prevent
any person or program between the two computers to read e-mail you are
sending or receiving. Note that, barring other software on your computer,
the messages will be stored decrypted on your computer and may be stored
decrypted on the remote recipient's or sender's system . Also, not all
e-mail servers are capable of encrypted communication; if our mail server
can, it will continue to encrypt the communication but will fallback
to a regular connection, without encryption, if the remote end is not
configured to also use encryption.
Information on how to reconfigure your e-mail software to use encrypted connection to send and receive e-mail from our e-mail server can be found in the following PDF files. Changes should be made after 2:00 AM Eastern, on Sunday, April 1, 2007.
The instructions for Apple Mail and Microsoft Outlook (above) will tell you to download two files. When instructed to do so, you can use these links:
